NLP began by studying the most effective communicators, which has developed into the systematic study of human communication. This study focuses on how outstanding individuals and organisations achieve their results. Once their methods have been identified (this process is called ‘modelling’), they can be taught to others so that they too can achieve these outstanding results.
In order to model, NLP studies how we structure our subjective experience. This includes how we think about our values and beliefs, and create our emotional states, as well as how we construct our internal world from our experience and give it meaning. No event has meaning in itself- we give it meaning. Different people may give the same event different meanings. NLP therefore studies experience from the inside.
NLP is a way of thinking, and a frame of mind based on curiosity, exploration, and fun. From modelling the techniques and strategies of excellent people NLP has developed a range of tools and techniques, which can be used by anyone to help them to achieve their results.
There is no one definition of NLP, but the following will provide a good idea of the field:
- ‘NLP is an accelerated learning strategy for the detection and utilisation patterns in the world’
(John Grinder)
- ‘NLP is whatever works’
(Robert Dilts)
- ‘NLP is an attitude and a methodology which leave behind a trail of techniques,’
(Richard Bandler)’
- ‘NLP is the method for modelling excellence so that it can be duplicated’
- ‘NLP is the systematic study of human communication’
(Aix Von Uhde)
- ‘NLP is the influence of language on our mind and subsequent behaviour’
(Joseph O’Connor)
- ‘NLP aims to detect and modify unconscious biases or limitations of an individual's map of the world. It operates through the conscious use of language to bring about changes in someone's thoughts and behaviour.'
How NLP Practitioners can help you:
NLP provides a new skill set that helps people to develop excellence in all areas of life. The therapy technique enhances physical, behavioural, communication and thought skills. This is very important for a well-balanced life; for example, you may be a top-level professional, but you may be still struggling in certain areas e.g., confidence, anxiety, addictions, or phobias.
NLP practitioners are trained to deal with people who may be facing such challenges and are also effective in helping people to enhance different areas of their lives. The therapy entails maximising the brain’s potential while embracing modern neuroscience discoveries to achieve the desired objectives.
